Tonight in Manchester there are a wide range of bands playing different venues to choose from, from an old metal band at the Ritz, an British metal band at Club Academy, a legend of alt rock at the Deaf Institute and of course tonight at Sound Control the finest British punk and indie bands.
Local Mancunians, Newlands are up first playing their way through some rocky tunes that are intricate and catchy at the same time. As the band keep saying throughout their set this is their first ever live show as a band and you would never have thought it. The band is a little bit wary but looks natural and comfortable on stage and play an impressive first ever gig.
Next up is Morain playing through some of their indie tinged rock songs, ‘Animals’ sounds just as good live as it does on their EP. Other songs like ‘Are We Lost’ and ‘Between The Lines’ also sound good live and are well received. With on stage banter going back and forth with the crowd when Wil Frost talks about Billie Joes latest outburst he’s told he has one minute left and goes off stage a little too premature and it feels strange with no real ending to their set.
Evarose – October 2012, Jericho, Oxford
How often do you see an all-girl band that can not only write but actually play instruments? Evarose are breaking all the moulds. Hailing from Oxfordshire, the dynamic four-piece are banging out their own blend of pop rock enveloping both raw energy and a vast amount of hooks.
Formed in 2010 and currently on tour with Welsh band Straight Lines, we caught them on a rainy night at an almost-home gig in Oxford. Exploding into their set and encouraging a rather shy crowd to come forward, they had heads and feet bouncing from the outset. Highlights came thick and fast, from the acerbic opening of ‘Change’ to the stripped back pulse of ‘Time Well Spent’. The top moment for us was the opening record ‘Best Left Alone’. An infectious riff that gives way to a chorus of bull-fighting strength, chanting “There’s nothing you can do to win”. Although only a six song set, the crowd were left ever so slightly mesmerised by the powerhouse front-woman Dannika Webber. Not only a killer voice but managing to imbue her performance with bucket-loads of charisma.
The set bounced in a smouldering selection of beautifully written rock hooks and ended with their first single ‘Cough It Up’, a tense but eminently danceable record.
Remember that feeling when you first heard rock with a female vocal? Well Evarose are building that ‘buzz’ all over again. So pull up your socks music pixies, because you probably haven’t seen the best of these guys yet.
